Douglas Hames, age 80, Morrow Drive, Forest City, NC, died Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the Hospice House of Rutherford County.
Douglas was born September 17, 1932 in Spartanburg County, SC to the late Hollis Hames and Emma Scruggs Hames. He was a graduate of Chesnee High School, class of 1949 and attended Central Wesleyan and Robinson Business College. He was a veteran of the US Army and worked for Milliken & Company for thirty-three years. Douglas was a former member of Providence United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School, Lay Speaker and Choir Director and was attending Forest City Foursquare Church. He had the distinction of being one of the first members of the Sandy Mush Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed bowling and all other kinds of sports.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Scruggs Hames and his second wife, Clara J. Hames and one brother, Tommy Hames.
Survivors include his son, Gene Mode and wife, Sue of Forest City; three daughters, Yvonne Biggerstaff and husband, Michael of Ellenboro, Patricia Arrowood and husband, Ronald of Forest City and Anita Fowler of Ellenboro; two sisters, Shirley Cash of Mayo, SC and Della Varner of Boiling Springs, SC; three brothers, Ted Hames and Kay Hames both of Chesnee and David Hames of Greenville, SC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ricky Poteat officiating. Interment will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
