Hazel Flynn

May 10, 1929 — April 24, 2019

Hazel Mae Flynn of Rutherfordton passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, surrounded by family. Born in Rutherford County, May 10, 1929 to the late George and Biddie Horn Chapman, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Chapman.
In Hazel's tenth year of school, her mother's illness and subsequent death required that she leave her education and provide assistance at home with her siblings. She was a loving daughter, caring sister, and devoted mother.
Hazel was first and foremost a homemaker who loved to cook and keep a spotless home. She was known for her kindness, her courtesy and consideration to others, but mostly for her devotion to the rearing of her four children. Later in life she worked for fourteen years as a housekeeper with Environmental Services at Rutherford Hospital.
Hazel is survived by four children, Danny Flynn and wife Beverly of Rutherfordton, Barbara Dale of Conover, Patsy Painter of Forest City, Jerry Flynn of Green Hill, and an "adopted" daughter, Cathy Ellenburg of Rutherfordton; surviving siblings, Bob Chapman (Marie) of Forest City, Lib Tessineer of Rutherfordton, Jack Chapman (June) of Forest City, Ann Splawn of Rutherfordton, and a sister-in-law, Dot Chapman of Ellenboro. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christy Hodge (Boyce), Heather Ferguson (Drelle), Jessica Smith (Brian), Jason Painter, Brandon Flynn, Nathan Flynn and eight great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Oak Grove Nursing Center for six and a half years of tender, compassionate care, and Hospice of the Carolina Foothills for their attention and kindness to Hazel in her last months of life.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Caroleen-Avondale-Henrietta Cemetery with Reverend Paul Flynn officiating.
Memorial donations are requested to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
