James D. "Sonny" Wells, Jr.

James D. “Sonny” Wells, Jr., age 91, of Henrietta, passed away, Friday, July 28, 2023 at Fair Haven Home in Forest City.

Sonny was born Sunday, November 8, 1931 in Rutherford County to the late James Daniel Wells, Sr. and Cleo Etta Butler Wells. He was a graduate of Tri-High School. Sonny was a partner with his family at J.D. Wells and Sons Supermarket in Henrietta for many years. He was a member of the Avondale United Methodist Church and enjoyed working outside and especially gardening. He also enjoyed watching nature shows and anything to do with outer space. Sonny was known for his good-hearted nature and his kindness to all.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha McDaniel Wells; brothers, Robert Wells, Lawrence Wells and James Franklin Wells, Sr.; sisters, Lula Miller, Ruby Upchurch; a niece, Susan Cox and her husband, David.

     Survivors include his nephews, James Lewis Wells (Sybil), Dr. James Franklin Wells, Jr. (Loretta), Steve Miller (Rita), Dr. Michael Miller (Beth) and Mark Upchurch (Angie); nieces, Dr. Anna Hamrick (Dale) and Mary Margaret Ferguson (David); sisters-in-law, Janet Turner and Patsy Rich; special friends, Jim Doggett, Jason Duncan, Jason Burrell and Beate’ Jenkins. He is also survived by his beloved pet dog, Champ.

       A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 2^nd at the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Robert Hodgens officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at the cemetery.
