James Monroe Toney, age 85, of Ellenboro, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the Smith Phayer Hospice House in Landrum, South Carolina.
Born June 14, 1931 in Rutherford County, he was a son to the late Arthur Toney and Nanny Earley Toney. He was a graduate of Sunshine High School, class of 1948 and veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War. James worked for Dicey Mills in Shelby for fifty-five years before retirement and was a member of Goodes Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Walker Toney; three brothers, Ray, Joe and Ronald Toney.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Toney Stacey and husband, Dale of Chesnee; brother, George Toney of Gastonia; three grandsons, Reese Arnold of Alabama, James Earnest Arnold of New York and Jeremy Arnold of Valdosta, Georgia. He is also survived by four great-grandsons, Miken Arnold, James Arnold, Eyan Arnold and Harmon Arnold.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Chad Hayes officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. At other times the family will be gathered at 3523 Battleground Road, Chesnee, SC 29323.
