Jean Smith

Jean Smith, age 87, of Rutherfordton, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Fair Haven Home in Forest City.

Jean was born September 14, 1933 in Chesnee, SC to the late Ted Smith and Inez Petty Smith. She was a graduate of Harris High School, class of 1953 and a member of Victory Baptist Church in Chesnee. Jean worked many years as a seamstress at Tanner’s Industries. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing church softball and sewing for her family. She was dedicated to her faith and to her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Short; daughter, Amy Parton Berry, brother, John Henry Smith; sisters, Shirly Moore, Leita Smith; son-in-law, Allen Wayne Parton and daughter-in-law, Susan Parton.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Avis Short Parton of Rutherfordton and Linc Parton McDaniel (Robert) also of Rutherfordton; son, Lane Parton of Waynesville; sisters, Mary Ingle of Henrietta, Jo Hatfield of Gastonia, Barbara Thompson of Charlotte, Rita Agnell of Rutherfordton, Vickie Crosswhite of Rutherfordton and Libby Parton of Rutherfordton; two brothers, Willie Smith and Kenneth Smith both of Rutherfordton. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be conducted for the immediate family at Broad River Baptist Church Cemetery.
