Lloyd L. Guffey, age 64, of 662 Ferry Road, Forest City, died January 31, 2009 at the Hospice House. Lloyd was born on October 20, 1944 in Rutherford County to the late Mack C. Guffey and Annie Mae Crisson Guffey. He was a longtime member of Caroleen Baptist Church where he faithfully served as Chairman of the Deacon Board and taught the Men's Sunday Class for over 15 years. He also served our country in the United States Navy for 30 years. He began his naval career as a non-commissioned Seaman Apprentice and through hard work and dedication was able to 'mustang' to a commissioned status and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion Post #423. He had spent the last ten plus years teaching at Chase High School. He also enjoyed hunting, golfing, gardening, basketball and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was a man of great integrity and was loved by his students, his church, his friends and his family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Guffey and Bill Guffey and one sister, Pauline Tucker.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, DiAnne Guffey; one daughter, Christy Gatlin and her husband, Gary of Forest City; one son, Matthew Guffey of Arden, NC; three grandchildren, Jonah Hensley, Emily Gatlin and Zachary Gatlin; three brothers Homer Guffey, Howard Guffey and Sam Guffey all of Forest City and one sister JoAnn Bostic also of Forest City.
