SMSgt. William “Whitey” Splawn, Ret., age 77, of Mooresboro, passed away Friday, September 30, 2022 at Atrium Health-Monroe, NC.
Whitey was born Friday, January 19, 1945 in Rutherford County to the late Shuford Splawn and Lennie Brown Splawn. He served honorably in the U.S. Army for over twenty-three years where he held the rank of Senior Master Sergeant before retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed selling and buying at local flea markets. Whitey was a seasoned conversationalist and a storyteller. In his younger days, he attended Henrietta First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Eloise Gunter, Martha Melton, Norma Hopper, Sally Oakes, Dorean Westbrook and three brothers, Herbert, Eugene and Gerald Splawn.
Survivors include his loving daughter, Charlene Douthit and husband, Robert of Monroe, NC; brother, Doyle Splawn (Earlene) of Mooresboro; a special sister, Teresa Swofford of Cowpens, SC and a host of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Brian Cole officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
