Vernon M. Matheney, age 84, of Ellenboro, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills in Forest City.
Born July 24, 1933 in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Forrest Matheney and Esther Bailey Matheney. Vernon was a graduate of Ellenboro High School, class of 1952. He was a dedicated, faithful and longtime member of Race Path Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, head of the building and grounds committee, head usher, assistant Sunday school director and on the nominating committee. He worked as the produce manager for Winn Dixie for eighteen years and Harris Teeter for twenty-five years before retiring. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed the outdoors and especially enjoyed driving his tractors. Vernon was a kind and gentle man who never met a stranger. He was a loving husband, dedicated father and a man who loved the Lord with all of his heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy Matheney Street; three sisters and four brothers.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Absher Matheney; three daughters, Nancy Skipper of Forest City, Lisa Matheny of Ellenboro and Jane Towery of Shelby; sister, Gladys Jackson of Ft. Mill, SC; son-in-law, David Skipper, Sr. of Forest City. He is also survived by five grandchildren, David Skipper, Jr., Jennifer Owensby, Ken Street, Jr., Stephanie Towery, Amanda Towery and three great-grandchildren, Alexis Owensby, Maggie Skipper and Nolan Skipper.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Race Path Baptist Church with Reverend John Godfrey, Reverend Christopher Estep, Reverend Ross Estep and Reverend Randall Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.
