Woody "The Hot Dog Man" Shahan, age 70 of Stonecutter Street, Spindale, NC, died Monday, August 18, 2014 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.
Born July 25, 1944 in Tarrant County, Texas, he was the son of the late Woodrow Wilson Shahan, Sr. and Anna Ree Smith Shahan Couch. Woody was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the US Army. He was also a faithful and longtime member of Maranatha Baptist Church in Shelby. He worked as a restaurant equipment salesman for many years, but he will be always known as "The Hot Dog Man" to those who knew him. For many years, he owned and operated a local hot stand and provided freshly made hot dogs and homemade lemonade at local events around the county and statewide. Woody had a heart for people and used his business to be a blessing to many. He enjoyed horseback riding, cooking at backyard barbeques and especially enjoyed skydiving. He was devoted to his family and loved each of them dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Harry Couch.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-eight years, Sandra Lynn Shahan; three sons, Woodrow Weldon Shahan and wife, Kelly of Hurst, TX, Robbie Shahan and wife, Jessica of Rutherfordton and Stephen Shahan and wife, Christine of Forest City; two daughters, Melissa Sue Shahan Hutchins and husband, Matthew of Spindale and Becky Shahan Godby and husband Kenny of Pembroke Pines, Florida; two brothers, Harry Anthony Couch, Michael Scott Couch and a sister, Anita Gayle Royalty and husband, Kenny all live in the Ft. Worth, TX area. He is also survived by his in-laws, Cec and Lee Reid of Forest City, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Jim Davidson and Reverend Frank Camp officiating. Interment will follow in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
