Worth 'Dan' Wilkie, age 78, of New House Road, Ellenboro, NC, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at his residence.
Dan was born on April 13, 1933 in Rutherford County, NC to the late Ancie Wilkie and Velma Short Wilkie. He was a graduate of Ellenboro High School, class of 1950 and served in the US Army as a military policeman. He worked for Celanese Corporation for 23 years before his retirement and owned and operated Wilkie's Greenhouses for over 30 years. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Dan loved anything to do with the earth and growing things. He loved farming, gardening and working with all kinds of plants. He also enjoyed raising livestock. He had a desire to leave a legacy of hardwork and the knowledge of how our food is grown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Stanley Wilkie.
Survivors include his wife of almost 38 years, Carolyn Wilkie; one daughter, Lisa Shehan and husband, Kevin of Rutherfordton; one son, Eric Wilkie and wife, Amy of Bostic; two sisters, Betty Hensley and husband, Earl of Caroleen, Sandra Morgan and husband, James of Rutherfordton and one brother, Marvin Wilkie and wife, Shirley of Greenville, SC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kasey Shehan, Kristin Shehan, Alyssa Wilkie, Carter Wilkie and numerous nieces and nephews.
